Boys and Girls Clubs of Broward County Train Kids for Future Careers Presented by Reagan Wireless

The Boys and Girls Clubs of America aim to help their members “reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.” In Broward County, Florida, that mission has most recently taken the form of a summer vocational training program in construction work with help from the local Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) chapter.

Participants in the program complete a four-week course of study that teaches the basics of plumbing, carpentry, and electrical wiring. Upon completion of the course, they have the equivalent of about one-eighth of the standard apprenticeship program ABC provides. In its first year, the program provided training to 26 Boys and Girls Club members at the cost of $25,000, which was paid through donations to the organization.

The response from students has been overwhelmingly positive; because many will not attend college, the skills they have learned in the program provide them with a solid basis for future career success. As an added bonus, many now have the skills they need to complete household repairs.

The Boys and Girls Clubs of Broward County plan to continue the program in future years.
